Lawrence Abrams. In the Mac OS it is possible to change the default program the operating system will use to open a file when you double-click on it. After you have changed this file association, though, you may want to reset this file association back to the default program that Mac OS was configured with when it was installed. To set or change the default program that opens a file, here’s what you’ll do: Right-click by touching two fingers to your Mac’s trackpad and click or right-click your mouse on the file. Next, select “Get Info” and a long, rectangular box will appear on your Mac’s screen. Go down to where it says “Open with.” Click the arrows in the selector box. You know how when you double-click a PNG file it opens in Preview? What if you want it to open in Photoshop by default instead? This guide shows you how to to just that – change the default App that’s used when you open a file. Some common “I’d rather use this App when I open this kind of file” scenarios are:• Open PDF files with Preview instead of Adobe Acrobat • Open.txt files in an App other than Notepad • Open media files (MP3, MP4, AVI etc.) in VLC instead of iTunes or Quicktime The process to switch default Apps is super-fast and easy to do, and easy to change again later any time you want. • For the sake of this guide we’re going to switch.M3U files (commonly used as playlists) from opening in iTunes to the media player VLC. That doesn’t mean you need to do the same, this process is the identical no matter what type of file you’re dealing with. ![]() Click the ‘pull-down’ menu to open it. • If the App you want to open this type of file with from now on is listed, select it. If the App you want to open this file with is not listed – don’t worry, just click the Other item from the menu. • A pop-up window will appear allowing you to pick the program you want to open this type of file with. If the App you want to use to open the file with is ‘greyed out’ and you can’t select it – no problem. • Click the Enable: menu and select All Applications. Now the App you want to select will not be greyed out. • Make sure that the Always Open With box is checked, and then click the Add button. • Almost done! Click the Change All button. • You’ll be prompted for confirmation – click Continue. • Now just make sure that the App you want to use is the one listed as the (default) in the Open with: section. Repeat these steps for other file type associations you want to make. When you install or get a new PC with Windows 7 installed, by default, there are programs setup to do certain things. Whether it’s editing text, viewing images, listening to music or some other common task Windows has a default program to get you going. The programs that come set as the default might not be your favorite tool. For example, you may want to edit a picture in Adobe Photoshop instead of using Windows Live Photo Gallery. The following features and functionality, Default Programs, Open With and Always Open With can help you do that. Default Programs Say you have 3 or more programs that do the same thing on your computer, but you prefer to use one all the time when you trigger a task relating to that particular program. A common example of this would be clicking a link that starts your email program. Of course, the email program that starts might not be the one you want to use. With Default Programs, you can change that. Click Start, then click Default Programs This opens the Default Programs Control Panel items Here you can choose the programs that Windows uses by default. Click the Set your default program link. Wait while it loads the list of Programs available.
